I refuse to believe that I'm getting sick. Because if I refuse to believe that I'm getting sick, than surely I won't spend the rest of the day curled up on the couch watching Anthony Bourdain tour around various parts of the world eating delicious food. And if I refuse to believe that I'm getting sick, than surely the black eyed susans that are long-past-due for planting will at long last meet their soil destiny. And if I refuse to believe that I'm getting sick, than surely my children will have a mother that has enough energy to do something besides sit in the bath tub and pick her bellybutton or something. And yet. Here I am. With my homemade cough syrup recipe.
Because, I guess it's important I face facts here. I'm getting sick.
I have quite the powerhouse of natural remedies which I am happy to employ when stuffy ears, sore throats, a tickling cough, and fatigue set it. And I'm happy to add this homemade cough syrup recipe to the mix. Because it worked wonderfully!
The entire family has battled this teeny little cold, each of us for a few days. Guess it was my turn. I'm thankful it never got any worse than a few runny noses and an excuse to take an extra nap – how blessed we are!
This homemade cough syrup recipe was really a hit – it soothed the scratchy throat and aided in pain relief as well as the coughing.
Homemade Cough Syrup Recipe
Please note: This recipe includes raw honey, which is not suitable for children under the age of one.
You will need:

– 2 tablespoons raw honey
– 2 tablespoons filtered water
– 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated ginger or dried ginger
– 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
– 1 tablespoons freshly squeeze lemon juice
1. Combine the coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, raw honey, and filtered water together in a small saucepan. Heat verrrrrry gently and slowly, until just melted and combined. Shut off the heat.
2. Add in the ginger, cinnamon, and lemon. Stir to combine. And because I know how much you love freaky hand pictures, I've posted three in a row! Extra freaky!
For those of us who live a ways out of town, mixing up this homemade cough syrup version is much more efficient than running into town for some last minute cough syrup purchasing. Tag that onto the fact that this homemade cough syrup recipe doesn't include any artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners and it's a double whammy. I don't feel comfortable giving my kids store-bought cough syrup. Call me crazy. But this homemade cough syrup recipe I can easily feel confident in sharing with them.
Dosage: The adults took 1 tablespoons as needed to sooth our throats. The children took 1 teaspoon as needed. Store at room temperature for a few days or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Warm tea. Homemade cough syrup. Essential oil bubble baths. Rest.
It's a small price to pay for the reminder to be still in this season of madness on the farm. Life around the homestead is buzzing a million miles an hour and while I still protest the fact that a minor illness has set in, I'm thankful to be still for the moment.
Now, if you'll excuse me, it's time for my bubble bath.
Dare I say, I sort of wish I'd get sick more often!
