Good news, friends. I'm sorting out my fashion identity crisis! I know, I know. That's very important to the state of the world. But when I shared my inner fashion turmoil with you a few weeks ago, the response was epic. That tells me I'm not alone and that many of you are in the same position. What's a woman to wear while she romps around the farm, homeschools kids, cooks up a storm in the kitchen, and seizes the day? Well, here's my fall farm fashion for you – my outfits for the season!
But first, an update…
First up, a few updates on the last fashion identity crisis post:
- My custom linen dresses are phenomenal, though I fear are the complete wrong “shape” for what style I've landed on through all of this. I find myself most comfortable in items that are slimming to the top, tight on the waist, and a bit larger or flowy on the bottom. I do love these dresses, though I'll probably not be wearing them as much as I originally had planned. They haven't felt quite “right” yet.
- Thank you for helping me decided what to do about my hair. I ended up taking out as much color as I could and getting it back to as natural of a tone as possible. The plan now is to just let it grow out in all it's natural glory and enjoy it for what it is! Which is dirty blond. (Actually, let's call it dark honey blond because that sounds prettier). Truth be told, I'm excited for it to grow out and be it's natural, healthy self. Live free, my poor color-damaged hair! A great life awaits you!
Here's what the hair ended up looking like:
Okay. Back to fall farm fashion.
It's worth noting, we live on a working farm. I milk a cow, feed animals, and am outdoors everyday (thought, full disclosure, I often do it in my pajamas. I know. The horror.)
But the thing is, I roll out of bed, cry and beg for Stu to make me coffee, and then head out to milk Cece before the sun is even up. I enjoy staying in my flannel pajamas for that wee bit longer. The fall farm fashion outfits that I'm showing you are what I wear around the house while I'm cleaning, homeschooling, cooking, hosting dinners, etc. The only exception are the heels, which are for special occasions or church. (Because a girl has to have at least a few tricks up her sleeve, am-I-right?).
And yes, I wear skirts often – probably around 50% of the time – because I find them very comfortable and feminine. I love the way I feel in a skirt.
(Anyone else? Beuhler?)
Some of the pieces photographed are pieces I had in my closet already – though all of these outfits were connected with a few second-hand pieces from Poshmark.
I love second hand clothing, I love saving some money on buying used, and I love having pieces that all fit together.
Let's do this thing!
My Fall Farm Fashion Outfits:
YSL wool dress, lined leggings, leather pumps. Levis wide-leg jean, wool turtleneck, red flats. Homemade wool skirt, wool turtleneck, red flats.
As you can see, I tend to gravitate towards fairly neutral colors. Black is a big one for me – I just feel good in it! I do love color though and shoes is the perfect way to pop that in. These red flats I got from Stitchfix years ago.
The wool skirt was from an antique store and was homemade by someone back in the 60's (based on the tag she sewed in). It's fabulous and looks great with or without leggings underneath.
And these wide leg Levis. SWOON! I need to get them tailored (they're a bit too big in the thigh for me and just a touch too long). But the high waist drives me wild! (Drives Stu wild too. TMI?)
Like with all the other pieces, the YSL dress looks great with or without leggings and could easily be dressed up for a hot-date with a strand of pearls and some nice earrings. (Hot date? Do people get to have those still?). The Sam Edelman pumps were a Poshmark find and they're quite uncomfortable but positively fabulous. I would absolutely wear them for a special occasion – life's too short to always be comfortable anyway.
Hand-knit fisherman's sweater, Levis, wellies. LL Bean sweater, Levis, wellies. J.Crew turtleneck, Gap wool skirt, Sabah flats.
Of Nordic blood, I have quite a strong affinity for fisherman's sweaters. These are both second hand sweaters that I snagged off Poshmark for less than $10 a piece. I'd prefer them with a dark skinny jean, but I got paint on my pair, and thus am I'm still waiting for the new ones to arrive. Sweaters, jeans, and wellies is about as comfortable as it gets for days when there are farm chores to be done.
This is the season for turtlenecks and I'm all about this red and white stripped J.Crew version. It's very soft and would easily fit under a sweater, but is certainly pretty enough to wear on its own. It's happy with skirts or jeans, fancy shoes or my well-loved Sabah flats.
J.Crew turtleneck, Levis wide-leg jean, nude heels. Lululemon top, Gap wool skirt, nude heels. Lululemon top, Gap wool skirt, leggings, wellies.
See? Doesn't it look cute with those nude pumps? Wide leg jeans and heels are simply made for each other. The look is so polished! I love that I can romp around the house in any of these outfits and just slap on some lipstick and change out the shoes for a dinner party.
And can we talk about this plaid skirt? Look. At. It.
I'll probably just live in it until March.
And lastly, because you can't take the farm out of the farmgirl…
Flannel. Always.
I couldn't not show flannel. I've got three that I rotate through often – sometimes I wear them with skirts, sometimes with jeans, and if I'm just lounging around the house – sometimes just with wool-lined leggings.
That's it. I know. You've now wasted ten minutes of your life that you'll never get back going through my fall closet with me. Aren't you glad?!
I'm glad.
It's good to know you're not alone.
Tell me what you're wearing for fall farm fashion in the comments!
I’ve been longing for this blog post and I’m so glad it’s finally here. It’s dripping with inspiration and the taste of fall that I’ve been needing. Thank you for taking the time to share these with us, and I’d love to see more in the future.
I find this post so funny because I also have had fashion identity issues here on my farm. Gone are the days of a huge closet filled with designer clothes worn daily to an office, meetings, dinners, city life. I now have tubs in storage packed with clothes that are too nice to donate, but just don’t work for the farm… but it leaves me lacking because I’m not a T shirt and jeans girl. In the summer I love cotton frocks and my various cowboy and work boots, or my Daisy Duke cut offs and a flowy top. In the fall I sometimes find myself less inspired, so your ideas have nudged me to my closet! Thanks!!
This is fabulously inspiring! I am also having the same problem. I love to look chic but hashtag farm life! These are great ideas and really inspired me! Thank you
Thank you so much for sharing! I’ve been seriously struggling over here, too! I want feminine, but need to be able to check animals and clean the well pump. Not to mention homeschool, 4 kids, and dinner.
But can we see these linen dresses?! Dying of curiosity here! #2020 is a little boring…help a girl out!
Yes, we need to see the linen dresses! Maybe some skilled seamstress had an easy fix to make them more to your liking.
Must. See. Linen. Dresses! 🙂
Also, that purple fisherman’s sweater is delicious. I am A FAN of purple.
Also also, my style is shifting toward something closer to yours which is nice because I don’t see it too often on Instagram. I’m stuck in a weird place between my desired English country/ English hunting(??) look (I keep telling my husband, think pacific northwest but English lol i dunno how else to explain it) and basic Instagram mom which I really am trying to move away from.
I LOVE English country/equestrian feel to my clothes. I love Shaye’s outfits especially the skirts paired with leggings! I can’t get enough of plaids in skirts and flannel shirts. I definitely have to look into these wide leg Levi’s. I am old enough to have high waisted jeans back in the late 70’s. I will have to get use to them… again! Skinny jeans are so hard for me!
Where do we score those amazing Levi’s? I hate getting hay in my boots!
Love your fall selections..so comfy and yet stylish.
Get those linen dress is tailored so that they are fitted through the bodice and waist! Then they will look great over leggings and wellies or clogs.
Nice choices!!! I’m wearing sweaters (thrift stores, American Eagle, Old Navy) paired with my favorite jeans from old navy and leggins. There’s always a nice dress and romper paired with a cardigan as well!
YAY FOR FALL!!!!!
Love it!
Shaye, I love the way you write. You inspire not only with farmy news but you lighten the load with all your humor! Thank you friend, Carla
Thank you for sharing! Reminds me that I need a little variety and color at 70 and stop wearing bland thermal tops and pull on pants. The plaids and colors are fabulous and will highlight my white hair. I am starting a small permaculture plant and food business and have to look interesting.
I’ve been enjoying seeing your progress on this! I am almost 33 weeks pregnant and I have grand plans for my post partum wardrobe. I have found a free outfits to enjoy while pregnant in the Georgia late summer heat but do not want to invest much in what I’ll only need for 2 more months. I’ve got a lot of items I am planning to make so it’ll take a little time to get them going but will be totally worth the effort.
Must see the linen dresses and where did you get them?! As a seamstress, I bet you could find someone who can alter them lightly for you to be some of your favorites!
I am not a farmer (although I did have my first veggie garden this year!), but as an artist, I do have similar fashion goals. I want to be comfortable, but still look a little cute or at least feel like I do! Some days in my studio, I may not see anyone other than my sweet husband. But that’s ok, I feel better and paint better if like how I’m pulled together. Love your choices, and I’m a super fan of second hand clothing and home furnishings!
Love the post. Thanks for sharing. I like so many of the same things. I go to the thrift store way too much though and get too many things and then often come home and don’t know how to pair them. So definitely appreciate your ideas! Love your honey colored natural hair. So pretty!!!
My dilemma is that I go out to work in the garden & barn and feel as if I need to shower before I start to cook or even sit on the couch. It’s not that I don’t like being dirty, I’m totally ok with it, I’m just kind of OCD about being clean in the house (even though my house isn’t always clean). Is that something that troubles you too. How do I get over it??
LINEN AND WOOL LINED LEGGINGS? Would you please share where you got those?
I’m a wool girl for winter. Love my dresses and skirts too. Linen is my favorite for warmer seasons. My style tends to be a slightly more modern (only slightly) Beatrix Potter maxi skirts/comfy blouses to skinny jeans, boots and a wool sweater. I do have flannel for homestead chores though.
Finally! Someone who lives a farm life and does it with comfort and style!
Love this post. Love the clothes. Thank you for representing all of us with
and grace.
Oops! Should be style and grace.🥰
Wanted to add, that I definitely want to see the linen dresses. 😉
Love your fashion show! I am a long time turtleneck fan … like for 50 years (yes I’m a senior). Those skirts are fab! I wear more flats and casual shoes all the time. No longer wear heels. :{ Love the wellies! and am into flannels, still. Yes it doesn’t matter how old you get,… if you like or love it … wear it ! I don’t care what anyone else thinks.
Love this post! Love your style. Where did you get the blouse that you are wearing in your recent video?
I don’t live on a farm but we do plant crops on a 1 acre plot in Georgia in a sunburn of Ga we grow tomatoes 3kinds lettuce butternut squash green beans potatoes sweet and russet cilantro lavender in a pot mint red flowers 🌺 butterflies bushes and we feed hummingbirds every summer til fall I love ❤️ your posts tomatoes in oil your herb in salt your kitchen wallpaper your French songs while you knead your dough blessings Nilda Jordan
This post just made my morning! Tons of inspiration and very much needed! Love turtlenecks and I’m now on the hunt for some new ones. Your blog and the podcast are such a blessing to me and so many others! Thank you for sharing your lives with us! Blessing to you, Jen
If you’re curious about style identity, I’d recommend Truth Is Beauty’s website (https://www.truth-is-beauty.com/). which is about identifying colors lines that harmonize with those that are already present in your body.
Based on your picture and some of the things you’ve said, you probably have a good amount of Classic in you (style identity has restrained, symmetrical lines.) There are a couple other essences, possibly Romantic. There are some really good articles on the website, the ones I recommend are: “Dress for your face, not your body” and “On Using the Terms ‘Masculine’ and ‘Feminine’ in Style Analysis.” Good luck!
