Homemade Heartburn Remedy. And the bonuses of pregnancy.

September 12, 2012 - 20 Comments

Pregnancy has it's bonuses.

Spider veins and heartburn are not part of those bonuses.

Unfortunately, I've been blessed with both throughout the last few weeks.  More so than I'd desire for myself.  But as I glance down at my blue-streaked legs, I am reminded that, alas, I am no longer twenty and well…chin hairs, spider veins, and saggy boobs are just part of it.

I'm okay with that.

I don't need to be twenty.  I'm pregnant with my second child and that is super rad.

Ya.  I just said super rad.  And I meant it.

Now, there's not too much I can do about the saggy boobs, but there is something I can do about the heartburn/acid-reflux that I'm so often battling as I lay down at night to read Harry Potter for seven hours straight.  Which is why I'm writing you today.

And there you were…thinking I had no purpose to this post…

In the effort of keeping this simple, nature, and cheap, I'd like to share with you my most favorite and effective heartburn home-remedy.  It, literally, works instantly.  I used it while I was pregnant with Georgia too and had the same fantastic results.

It tastes like sour beer.  But it works.  And that is the point.

Homemade Heartburn Remedy

You will need:
 – 1 small glass of water (4 oz. or so)
 – 1-2 teaspoons of raw apple cider vinegar
 – 1 teaspoon of baking soda

Mix together in a glass.  Plug your nose and chug it down.  I usually refill the glass with water and drink down some plain water before I unplug my nose.

The taste is momentary, but the results are wonderful.  There is nothing that will relieve that uncomfortable pain like it.

So just in case any of you are pregnant and suffering from this same wonderful blessing of pregnancy, I urge you to give it a try.  It really is a God-send.

And speaking of pregnancy….

I have very exciting news!!!!!

I'm pregnant!!

Oh wait.  You already knew that.

But seriously, I do have exciting news.  Yesterday, at our appointment, our OB did a quick ultrasound to see how the baby was positioned in the uterus.  God is so gracious – the baby is head down!

This VBAC may have happen after all!

Yesterday morning, before we knew the position of the baby, Stuart and I were very much at peace with whatever the Lord had planned for us this pregnancy and delivery.  I didn't go through all I did trying to get Georgia to flip in there without learning some lessons, as the Lord would have it, and I knew it was very important that I remembered and applied those learned lessons this time around.  I felt very much at ease with whatever that meant for this delivery.

After all, and hear my when I say this dear readers, our worth as women is not validated by how we give birth.

That being said, I am very excited that (at least for the time being), the baby is in the position it needs to be to have a normal, vaginal delivery this go-round.  What an exciting birth this could be!

I'm sorry for using the word vaginal.  It was necessary.

Guess this means I should start doing some stretches or something…just in case…

Yep.  I'll get right on that.  Right after I finish eating this brownie.

I told you, pregnancy has it's bonuses.  Heartburn isn't one.  Brownies are.

The end.

i am willing to try this recipe of yours, oh yes! how many times in a day do you/can you do it? does it tone the evil down for a while?
’cause i am not into evil, you know.

Seriously, Sally. This is incredible. Instant relief. I’ve only ever used it twice in one day…mine seems to be worst a night, but I don’t see why a few more times per day would hurt ya. I hope this helps! Let me know!

I am 5 months pregnant right now, and having the worse heartburn ever! I remembered an old friend taking something like that for heartburn, and I googled all around for a recipe, but couldn’t find one. I’ll definitely be giving this a try, thanx!

nice heartburn remedy…thankfully mine hasn’t been bad …yet. I mostly just have to avoid anything too acidic. But I will surely go ACV up in here when I need it. So thankful about proper positioning!! Praise the Lord.

No heart-burn yet, but I’m a few weeks into my second trimester, and still nauseous quite often. Can’t quite get over this “all food is repulsive to me” hump that I’ve been in since week 6. Any magic suggestions for that? 🙂

Speaking of magic– is there something about pregnancy that makes you want to re-read Harry Potter? Because I’m there too, sweetie. I bawled my eyes out finishing the Deathly Hallows last night (surreptitiously, so my husband wouldn’t laugh). What wonderful books for when you can’t sleep.

      Sarai,

I wish I had a magic suggestion. The only thing I really found helpful was filling up on the best food I could that didn’t gag me – like super delicious, free-range eggs and raw milk. Peanut butter toast. Bananas. Chicken soup, etc. Also, I found that as long as I ate every hour (seriously, a huge pain) I was usually okay. Eating more frequently may help with the nausea.

      Good luck!

Ok. My sister (Joanna Mallett – I think you went to school together?) has been after me for at least a year to read your blog, and I have finally done so. As expected, it’s adorable!

Congrats on your pregnancy and welcome to the south. Looking forward to keeping up with you!

    Blogging compadre,
    Beth

BAhahahaha 😀 Oh goodness, thanks for the laugh!

I’ll have to remember that heartburn remedy. Gee, apple cider vinegar and baking soda seem to be good for just about everything, don’t they?!?

Also, no worries about the use of ‘vaginal.’ Doesn’t bother me at all. We’re all girls here, right? Right.

You are hilarious, and sweet, and smart, and brave. I’m glad we’re friends–if only via the internet. 🙂

could be worse than spider veins–they could be varicose veins! I’ve had some fun ones pop up this time around, so today I’m stylishly sporting compression leggings under my shorts. haha! anyway, thanks for the heartburn recipe–thankfully, haven’t had much heartburn with either Brody or this one, but it’s good to have on hand (also for Ellis, next time he eats a bag of chips, a whole Ben and Jerry’s, and a couple beers–happened at choir camp. He got the worst heartburn of his life, and when he told me what he had eaten, I couldn’t even feel sorry for him, haha!)

I’m with you on the baking soda. I’ve just used 1/2 tsp. in water to bring things back to be more alkaline – so settling. Now I’ll have to try it with ACV and see how that works. Thanks.

I buy mine through Azure Standard. Try and find the raw if you can! Health food stores, Vitacost, and Amazon all carry it!

wonder how it would work on plain Reflux (not being pregnant)…I am on medication and want to get off of it. I had heard ACV would do it but was afraid to try.

That’s a great heartburn remedy, Shaye. Baking soda is high in salt though. If anyone is having to watch their salt intake, I’d use the apple cider vinegar and water and skip the baking soda. It’s very effective even without the baking soda. Cheers!

unripe — or green — papaya is used a lot in thai dishes (and maybe other asian cuisines, not sure). so that’s the place to look out for it.
