I want to show you an easier way to start seeds for your vegetable, flower, or herb garden this year. I learned this method – which involves multi-sowing (or “cluster planting” as I call it), “pricking” and “potting on” from Charles Dowding and it's made a massive difference in not only the success of my seedlings but also my attitude about it. I'm very, very happy with the results.

I'd love to hear in the comments how you start your seeds. What are some tried an true methods you've employed over the years?

I started my seeds 7 years ago and they bloomed perfectly. Thanks for your amazing teachings..

On onion starting:
I worked for several years with several different farmers on a local organic farm. The method of starting onions they (I’ll name Shane LaBrake here as the instigator on the Ecosystem Farm) used was similar to both your cluster and broccoli planting: Use a 1020 20-row flat insert of similar. Sew lines of onions. When they’re around 6″, take them into the garden and tug one end up; they’ll often bring the whole row up with them. Gently separate 1 or more and plant them in.
