We are having fun making videos here at The Elliott Homestead. This latest video shows how to butcher a rabbit. Plus, we talk a bit about which rabbit breed we have here on the farm.
I've written before about how to harvest rabbits, so make sure you check out that post and then watch the video. Together, they should give you a good idea of how to butcher meat rabbits on the farm.

I love the new video content, Shaye! I would love to see a transcript in the blog post though! Sometimes I can’t play a video (due to my internet!) and I would love to be able to read a transcript!

You are a tough woman! I could only butcher a couple of our rabbits before my hands would become all red and chapped. I’m not allergic to rabbits so I’m not sure what caused this type of reaction. Non latex gloves fixed that problem. 🙂
We didn’t have meat rabbits for more than about 5 years. When the boys got into junior high they became eating machines. We were eating about 10- 12 rabbits a week. I just couldn’t grow them out fast enough! It was good timing, however. The kids started 4H about that time and now we raise our own pork and our sweet Jersey, Maisy, gives us a calf to put in the freezer every couple of years. Mmmmm~ can’t beat that homegrown food!

Do you make rabbit broth with the left over bones? How do you utilize the pelt ? Do you have rabbit recipes to share?
We are getting chickens sometime this year for eggs, and my first garden ever is thriving. But I have never considered raising rabbits until I read your posts on them and now I’m pretty much obsessed with the idea. I’ve never skinned an animal, and I’ve only had wild rabbit once (it came out dry and yucky), so I am a little apprehensive and my husband is very apprehensive.
So do share some recipes please, and what y’all do with the rabbits other than the meat. Thanks!

Why do you decapitate last? Why didn’t you bleed it out?
Serious questions btw, I’d love to know. I’ve never raised rabbits but playing around with the idea.

Do you tan the rabbit fur?

Shaye,
I know I’m behind, having newly discovered your blog, but I am wondering if you could email me, or share somehow, this video since YouTube has taken it down.

Only 12 weeks old, how could you… they’re just babes. Born and immediately killed.
How would you feel if a superior species took your babies and harvested them for meat.
If you want to harvest animals, why not go after something that has a chance to fight back. Why choose something as timid as a bunny.
